Here is a list of Software I recommend, most of it free, and where to get it.
DROPBOX is the easiest way to share and store your files online. Up to 2GB for free.
AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. The free version of AVG's antivirus software doesn't include heuristics to detect previously unknown viruses, but it does update its definition files daily. Customizable and easy to use, AVG is a good free choice for unprotected users.
Spybot - Search & Destroy can detect and remove a multitude of adware files and modules from your computer. Spybot also can clean program and Web-usage tracks from your system, which is especially useful if you share your computer.(Free version)
CCleaner is a system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused files from your system--allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. (Free Version)
TuneUp Utilities 2008 is probably my favorite, but not free. well worth the price though.
TuneUp Utilities will improve your system's performance, thoroughly clean up your hard drives, solve your PC problems with a few clicks, and customize windows to your personal requirements. All in one program, simple and intuitive.
Trend Micro HijackThis lists the contents of key areas of the Registry and hard drive--areas that are used by both legitimate programmers and hijackers. The program is continually updated to detect and remove new hijacks. It does not target specific programs and URLs, only the methods used by hijackers to force you onto their sites. (Free Version)
TrueCrypt is a Free open-source disk encryption software for Windows XP/2000/2003 and Linux. Using 11 algorithms for encrypting your important data, this open-source tool provides more functionality than many programs for sale. Once you get past the initial learning curve, securing your private data is as simple as mounting a local drive.
